In around 1912 Gabriel Jouveau-Dubreuil, a young science teacher from French colonial Pondicherry in South India, visited the nearby town of Cuddalore order to inspect construction new Hindu temple. Since arriving India 1909 he had been travelling many temples and archaeological sites understand history Indian art. The modern temple that suburb at Tiruppappuliyur was not fact but wholesale renovation nine-hundred-year-old shrine on site sacred Tamil Shaivas. This just one substantially rebuilt 1890s 1930s under patronage wealthy merchant community, Nattukkottai Chettiars, time religious revival growing cultural nationalism.
